Frequently Asked Questions

MY JEWELRY TURNED A DARK COLOR, WHAT HAPPENED?

Your jewelry is tarnished. Just like your clothing, you need to clean your jewelry too. Copper content in jewelry causes oxidation which discolors the outer layer of your jewelry. This happens in silver but especially in brass or bronze as they have a much higher copper content than silver.

HOW DO I CLEAN TARNISH OFF MY JEWELRY?

There are several ways to safely clean tarnish off of metal. Our favorite item to use on the go is a polishing cloth by Sunshine, however you must never use this on plated items as it is micro-abrasive and can remove the plating layer. For serious tarnish cleaning we really like Brasso Metal Polish for brass and Goddards Silver Dip for sterling silver. You can also use a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda or any other product that safely cleans brass and sterling silver without scratching the surface.

WHY DOES MY SKIN TURN GREEN WITH BRASS OR BRONZE JEWELRY AND HOW DO I PREVENT IT?

If you bought a brass or bronze ring chances are once your skin started sweating between your finer and the ring you are left with a green band on your skin. This is totally normal! The copper content in your brass/bronze jewelry mixes with acids from your body, causing it to oxidize, forming copper oxide. The copper oxide creates a green film on your jewelry, which then leaves a green residue on your skin.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD FILLED AND GOLD PLATED JEWELRY?

Gold plated jewelry has a microscopic layer of gold on top of base metal. Gold Filled jewelry however, contains a thick layer of gold usually at 20% of the metal thickness. The result of gold filled jewelry is very long lasting gold layer, unlike plating which can wear off very quickly depending on jewelry care.

Gold filled jewelry is a great option for people with base metal allergies.

IS YOUR JEWELRY NICKEL FREE?

Yes, all of our jewelry is nickel free!
